What is this Food Growing Service?

Market area:  Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Wausau areas.

For a pre-paid "subscription" cost of $20 a week you will get a weekly basket of produce for up to 18 weeks of the growing and harvesting season. We ask that you complete payment by March 1, 2010. If you can't pay the whole season in advance, pay for as many weeks as you can in the initial installment, then complete the payments later.

(If any of this is confusing, just call us at 715-344-2939, thanks.)

What you get for your share:  We will constantly survey and monitor food prices for organic, farmers' market and grocery store offerings at a range of local markets during the season, and aim to provide you with a retail value equal to or greater for a comparable package you receive from us. This is our commitment to affordability.

Early in the season when the range of fresh produce is limited, weekly shares will be lighter than later weekly shares.

Why do farms ask for pre-payment for shares before the season starts?  Well, here's a short list of reasons:  all the expenses faced before the first vegetable plants poke up through the ground:

Seed costs
Compost costs
Utility bills
Paying helpers a livable wage
Internet service and website
Fencing to keep critters out
Maintaining the farm equipment
Water pumps and maintaining them
Procuring hardware and misc. supplies
Flats for planting the seeds in a greenhouse
Costs of potting soil or making our own potting soil
Cost of fuel for getting everything prepared and planted
Maintaining the vehicles to get produce to the consumers
A mile of hoses to run drip lines to the gardens for watering
Green manure and cover-crop seed to keep building soil organically

For poultry:
Chicks !
Shelters for chicks
Incubator for chicks
Freezers or freezer space rental
Moveable pens for pasturing the poultry
Vehicles and fuel to get poultry to the processor
Vehicles and fuel to get poultry to the consumer

...and things you never think of until you need them!
