What will a lifetime
membership cost me
?

Vers. 2.0 at 12/2009

· Here's the short answer: For low-income persons, this can be made payable at $20 per month. As the organization process proceeds, we'll set up a simple, recurring contribution system using PayPal, because PayPal is an easy-to-use and universally recognizable way to do this.

· $20 per month seems to be an amount which almost anyone with a job, even a low-income job, or a pension, could afford to pay...

· "How many months will I have to pay that $20 per month," you ask? That is the part that the board of directors will have to decide, once a permanent board is formed after filing Articles of Incorporation. Perhaps we'll do an online poll or something, to find out what potential members think is a reasonable lifetime membership cost. It should be adequate to capitalize the thing, yet not so large as to deter people from membership!

·  For example, if lifetime memberships were to cost $1,200 then after 60 months, a lifetime membership would then be paid in full.  People who can afford to pay the full membership would be asked to do so in shorter installments.

· The important thing to keep in mind is that the land for this land cooperative will be bought by the membership, and the least-expensive 10-acre parcels of land in this area cost at least $50,000. So if 50 people pay a $1,000 lifetime membership, or 25 people pay $2000 lifetime, for example, that would be sufficient to procure one of these small parcels of land. Agri-equipment and permaculture plantings and whatnot should be paid from ongoing economic activities (business).

· It seems prudent to find a trust company to do a custodial account to hold any membership fees in escrow until an actual land purchase is made. This would seem to provide security for prospective members' funds.
