don’t get me wrong, i think the alternative energy gadgets are a good thing. but i’m doubtful that we’ll be able to keep the American Way of Life, with its huge ecological footprint, up and running with the gadgets.
cooperation and community are going to be needed much more than gadgetry if the Peak Oil hypothesis proves right (that global oil production is going to peak sometime between 2010 and 2012, then decline quickly). so, for example, rather than 6 households trying to keep all 12 of their vehicles running around on the roads, it’s going to be a lot easier on all those households if they find a way to cooperate and pool, sharing perhaps 1/3 or 1/4 that number of vehicles.
(as a start)
or, for example, instead of those 6 households trying to scrape all the funds together to each buy 15 acres out in the country to build a trophy “green” house on, it may be a lot easier on them if they find a way to pool those resources and build one slightly larger “green” house with shared common space and private spaces for the households.
and the best site for such shared-common space or “cohousing” might not be out in the country, but right in town. there’s an awful lot of buildings in these central WI towns that could use rehabbing to make them “green” and energy efficient.
what are you thinking?
